Life moves fast. Between work, family, relationships, and everyday responsibilities, it’s easy to keep pushing forward without ever stopping to ask yourself one important question:
How am I really doing?
That simple question is where self-reflection begins.
In a recent episode of Sherley’s Show, we explored what self-reflection truly means, why it’s essential for personal growth, and how taking an honest look at ourselves, not everyone else, can completely change the direction of our lives.
Self-reflection is the practice of examining your own thoughts, emotions, behaviors, and decisions. Instead of focusing on what everyone else is doing wrong, self-reflection encourages you to ask:
Growth doesn’t happen by blaming others. It happens when we’re willing to be honest with ourselves.
One of the biggest barriers to personal growth is placing blame everywhere except where it belongs.
When setbacks happen, it’s natural to point fingers at circumstances, other people, or bad luck. While outside factors certainly exist, the only person we truly have control over is ourselves.
Self-reflection shifts the mindset from:
“Why is this happening to me?”
to
“What can I learn from this?”
That simple shift creates personal responsibility, and personal responsibility creates growth.
Self-reflection isn’t just about analyzing mistakes.
It’s equally important to recognize the positive decisions you’ve made and ask how you can build on those successes.
Healthy self-reflection includes asking:
Every experience, good or bad, offers an opportunity to improve.
There’s no single “right” way to reflect.
For some people, it’s complete silence away from distractions. Others prefer prayer, journaling, reading, or talking with a trusted friend.
Some healthy ways to practice self-reflection include:
The goal isn’t perfection.
The goal is creating space to hear your own thoughts.
One of the most impactful lessons shared during the conversation came from counseling:
You cannot fully love others until you learn to love yourself.
Many people spend years pouring into everyone around them while neglecting their own emotional health.
Self-reflection allows you to:
When you’re healthy emotionally, you’re able to give from a place of abundance instead of exhaustion.
One of the greatest benefits of self-reflection is recognizing the difference between what you can control and what you cannot.
Life will always bring unexpected situations.
Children will make mistakes.
Relationships will have challenges.
Plans won’t always go as expected.
Instead of reacting emotionally, self-reflection allows you to pause and ask:
“What part of this is actually within my control?”
When you stop wasting energy fighting things you cannot change, you gain more energy to improve the things you can.
The people surrounding you have a significant influence on your mindset and your future.
Sometimes self-reflection means asking difficult questions like:
Setting boundaries doesn’t mean being disrespectful.
It simply means protecting your peace while continuing to treat others with kindness and respect.
Looking back isn’t meant to fill you with regret.
It’s meant to provide wisdom.
Reflecting on past choices helps you recognize patterns and make better decisions moving forward.
Whether it’s career opportunities, financial choices, relationships, or life decisions, every experience teaches something valuable—if you’re willing to learn from it.
The goal isn’t to dwell on yesterday.
The goal is to build a better tomorrow.
Self-reflection is a life skill that can be modeled for the next generation.
Children learn by watching the adults around them.
When parents openly discuss decision-making, emotional regulation, accountability, and personal growth, children begin developing those same habits.
Supporting your children doesn’t stop when they turn 18.
Guiding them to think critically, evaluate their choices, and become responsible adults is one of the greatest gifts a parent can give.
You don’t need hours each day to grow.
Even five to fifteen minutes can make a difference.
Try asking yourself these questions daily:
Small moments of reflection create lasting personal growth over time.
Self-reflection isn’t about criticizing yourself.
It’s about understanding yourself.
The more aware you become of your thoughts, behaviors, and choices, the more intentional your life becomes.
Growth starts with honesty.
Healing starts with awareness.
And lasting change begins the moment you’re willing to look inward instead of outward.
Take a few minutes today to disconnect from the noise, sit with your thoughts, and ask yourself one simple question:
“How can I become a better version of myself today?”
That small habit may become one of the most powerful investments you ever make in yourself.
